Scum Surfin
2024
'Scum Surfin' is a collaboration with an unknown artist; a repurposing a of a work that was meant be to discarded. It explores the industrialization process in a quaint coastal town without consideration for its inhabitants and the land itself. Since this story is constantly unfolding in different variations worldwide, it's loosely set; however, it has strong foundational themes rooted in Southeastern Louisiana. I found this painting on the curb and knew that it had the potential to tell a story if given a little bit of help. I studied the artist’s indentations and found the title etched in the textured waves, along with the train tracks and other compositional elements. I don’t know if I quite consider it done yet, but once I feel like it is I plan on returning it to the curb that I found it on.
Save Our Souls
2023
Crafted with repurposed obsolete technology, ‘Save Our Souls’ is a commentary on humanity’s increasingly rapid intertwining with automation. I drew inspiration from a drawing I did in treatment during early recovery, in which the prompt given was to draw my addiction. The first thought that came to mind was somebody drowning, calling out for help, but they can’t quite reach the life preserver being thrown to them. All the while, the tide is growing stronger and an incoming wave is on the verge of sweeping them away. I modified this idea to relate to the overconsumption of technology. The ocean is constructed from a series of carved 1s and 0s, the binary code sequence that underlies all computer coding of every interface we use. I installed some battery powered lights inside as well to resemble the inner workings of a modem. The speaker is a counterpart meant to emphasize the incessant attention-grabbing nature of modern technology, with messages like “Listen to Me” and “I am very important [to me]”.
Web Waltz
2023
An intricate web spun in the heart of my living room, "Web Waltz" is an arachnid playground of unwound cassette tape with a sheet music backing. I rescued the sheet music from a treasured local coffee house/music venue that needed help rehoming some of their literature, and the tapes came from an overcrowded bin of analog music at the thrift. It transforms at night when you flip the switch on the red lightbulb at its center.
Untitled Diva
2023
She has many things to say, but she hasn't told me any of them yet. Maybe you can get her to speak. She's meant to hang pretty on a wall.
